Baby steps are ok ...

So it has been quite a while since I said that I was going to start using evernote and I said I was going to give updates on my progress, which I have not done .... (I'll blame it on the pocketbook ...)

Until now!

When I wrote the orginal blog post, I had HUGE plans in my mind for how I was going to get started. However, it is the getting started part that I had so much trouble with. I would think of these ideas that I wanted to keep track of, but then would convince myself that those simple/small ideas may not be worthy of posting on evernote .... I know that no one else would see it, but that is just what I thought.

If I am going to do something, I want to do it all the way ...

So I had to convince myself that it would be OK for me to start by just taking baby steps in learning to use evernote. Here is my progress so far ...

  • February:  I started simply by making a note for the phone number of the pediatrician I needed to remember to call. I found that I could find it there much easier than trying to look through the contacts on my phone.
  • March:   I attended a conference and thought it might be a great time to try out evernote to take notes for that, but I chickened out. I did take a few notes in there and got the url of a website sharing some resources. Later this month, I was helping with a Battle of the Book competition for middle school students. A few of the books sounded very interesting and I wanted to remember their titles. Since the only thing I had with me at the time was my phone, I listed those titles in evernote.
  • April:   After just starting a new Bible study, I came across a verse (Message translation) that I really wanted to remember and have with me, so the first place I though of placing it was evernote, so I used my laptop and created a note (I told you I was taking baby steps). The next week, I heard something on the radio that I wanted to remember, so I put the quote and the name of the lady in evernote. A few weeks after that, I was at an elementary school when someone told me how she was using Wonderopolis with her students. I quickly opened up evernote on my tablet to quickly put down what she was saying so I could use those ideas on a future blog post.
  • May:   While I was sitting in a meeting, I was asked to look up some information and bring it to the next meeting. Where did I automatically go to help me keep track of what I needed to do? I went to evernote on my phone.  Later that night, we watched a movie at home and I heard a quote that I knew I wanted to use ... so I made a quick note in evernote!Yesterday I made a to do list on the back of a piece of paper, but I knew I would not be able to keep up with that page, so I opened up evernote on my desktop and quickly added my list of things to do as well as the ideas to write about.

Today I saw a much more advanced user of evernote use it to start taking notes during a meeting ... for a slight second I felt bad about not automatically thinking to do that also.  Then I thought about how far I have come with my use of evernote in just a few months ...

I started by just jotting down a phone number and have moved to posting a to do list on there for me to constantly refer back to ....

That may not sound like much, but I am proud of the baby steps I have taken and some of the doors I have pushed open just a little bit!

Congratulations on your progress! Making changes takes time. I'm glad youre giving yourself credit for what you've done instead of lamenting what you haven't. I wrote about that idea just last night. It's tough for me.

Stopping by from SITS. Have a great weekend.

I use evernote quite a bit. For business ideas, brainstorms, meeting notes, potential blog posts, etc. It's great having access to it on my phone, iPad or computer. I started small too, but I'm starting to really use it now. Baby steps is good!
