If You Could Create a Switcheroo, What Would You Do?

Have you ever wondered what kind of animal you would create if you take one part of animal A and combine it with another part of animal B and then maybe even throw in a third part of animal C?

(So after I finished typing that questions, I realized how crazy it sounds, but …)

What would you create?

If you wanted your animal to run or move fast, what animal’s legs would you use?

If you wanted your animal to see well at night, what animal’s eyes would you use?

Where would you want your animal creation to live?

How would you animal be able to adapt to that environment?

When I taught 4th grade Science, we learned about animal characteristics, adaptations, and environments.

One of the projects we did was to design an animal for a certain habitat. Another project we did some years was to design a habitat for an animal a group of students created.

Those projects and the learning that took place were the first things to pop to my mind when I discovered the Switcheroo Zoo today!

I see so many possibilities for learning, creating, differentiation, reaching students of varying learning styles, reading, writing, as well as creative and critical thinking!

I know that sounds like a lot …. but this site provides so many opportunities and ideas for things to do both online and offline!

This is only just the beginning …

Although you can create the animals and the habitats at this site, think about the great writing experiences students could have based on what they were able to build! Think about all the skills and integration that could take place!

There is also an area to FEED the animals … you get to sort the animals and then try to determind the right type of food they need!

Think about the different levels of learners to which this site could apply!

I encourage you to go explore and let me know what part you like the best or think would work best for your students … or even what changes you can make so the site would work even better for your environment!

Think about the creative stories children could make up about these combination animals!

What kind of animal am I going to create now?
