Play!!!! (Creative Thinking Prompt #32)

In the “Grow Creativity!” article, Candace Hackett Shively shares four aspects of creativity: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. This article had me hooked from the beginning:

The world needs creative thinkersscientistsengineersleaders, and contributing workers. yet research repeatedly shows creativity is schooled out of us.

The Creative Thinking Challenge prompts focus on areas in all of these aspects and use ideas inspired by many different sources.

I would love for you to participate …

  • even if you don’t think you are very creative
  • the point of these prompts is to get the creative juices flowing
  • even if that only means letting small ideas begin to trickle out

I find that I get lots of new ideas from looking at the things others have done … and I bet we all interpret the prompts in unique ways.

The best part is that you get to choose how you want to respond to this prompt. And there is no deadline.

(I post past prompts on the Creative Thinking tab at the top of my blog)

If you have an idea for a Creative Thinking Prompt, please let me know!

Creative Thinking Prompt: Play

Play can lead to learning …

Play can be inspiration …

Play can be re-energizing …

I recently attended the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) conference and got to hear (what I think is) one of the BEST keynotes ever!!!

Kevin Carroll encourages everyone to embrace their spirit of play and creativity to maximize their human potential and sustain more meaningful business and personal growth (source).

I loved the way he used storytelling to convey his message (that could be an idea for another Creative Thinking Prompt) and focused on the need for PLAY!

He was behind the idea for this video:

So the Creative Thinking Challenge Prompt for this month is connected to PLAY!

While looking through Caffeine for the Creative Mind, I found one of the 250 exercises to wake up your mind related to play:

Sports are ingrained into our psyches as youngsters. We love sports. We would play all day if the sun would always stay in the sky. Alas, now we are confined to our desks, sentenced to only play sports at lunch and on weekend. But what if we could play sports right now !? What would we use as equipment? What are the rules?

That’s your task right now, to create a new sport, playable right there in your office or studio, using only the things you have available to you right now.

Look around you.

Write down the rules.

So what are you waiting for?

Have fun and celebrate Creative Thinking!
